Dewey's Nightmare: The Library Play Challenge

Seven playwrights.

Seven random library books.

Seven days to write a play.

On Saturday, October 6, seven playwrights (including Laura Eason, Kyle Jarrow, Alexander Poe, Rachel Shukert, Justin Swain, Eric Sanders, and Casey Wimpee) walked blindfolded into Brooklyn's Reanimation Library (http://www.reanimationlibrary.org) and chose a book AT RANDOM from the shelves. They then each had one week – until Saturday, October 13 – to write an entire ten-minute play based on the book, whether it be about math, science, medicine, etc.

On Sunday, October 14, the playwrights will be paired with their director and actors (again, at random) and be given exactly ONE HOUR to rehearse. That evening, Sunday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m., will be the world premiere of Dewey's Nightmare: The Library Play Challenge at the Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond Street, just off Lafayette in the East Village – 6 to Bleecker or B/D/F/V to Broadway-Lafayette). The performance will also feature live music and visual art created during the week, and the audience will get to vote for their favorite play at the end of the evening!

This event is sponsored by The Thursday Problem (Eric Sanders, Artistic Director, http://www.funintrouble.com), Working Man's Clothes Productions (Isaac Byrne, Artistic Director; Jared Culverhouse, Executive Director, http://www.workingmansclothes.com) and the Reanimation Library (Andrew Beccone, Head Librarian). All tickets are $10, with profits going to 826NYC (http://www.826NYC.org), a Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills.
